Demis Hassabis stepped away from running Google DeepMind day to day on 8 August to become chairman and Alphabet chief scientist, with CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu taking operational control. Jeff Dean departed after 27 years to found Discovery Loop with several senior researchers.
Two changes at the top of the same organisation in the same week is a reorganisation, not a coincidence. The shape of it — founder to chairman, CTO to operations, and the most senior engineer in the company's history leaving to start something — describes a lab moving from research institution to product operation.
Kavukcuoglu inherits a specific competitive problem. Coding has become the battleground in frontier AI, and it is the one where Google has been behind OpenAI and Anthropic despite comparable underlying capability. Handing operations to the CTO is a bet that the gap is execution rather than research.
Jeff Dean's departure is the harder one to replace. Twenty-seven years, and a body of infrastructure work — MapReduce, Bigtable, TensorFlow, TPUs — that is a substantial fraction of how modern machine learning is done. Discovery Loop takes several senior researchers with him.
It fits a pattern the sector has been living with all year. Noam Shazeer, a Transformer co-author, went to OpenAI; John Jumper, who led AlphaFold, went to Anthropic. Talent movement at this seniority is not attrition — it is the redistribution of a very small number of people who have done the thing before.
