Baseten closes $1.5bn as inference serving keeps absorbing capital

Baseten's $1.5 billion round lands in the same window as Fireworks AI's $1.5 billion Series D. Two nine-figure raises into the layer that runs other people's models, weeks apart, from investors who mostly also hold model companies.

The implicit thesis is that model quality is converging while serving economics are not. Capability gaps between frontier models have compressed to where most enterprise workloads are genuinely indifferent between two or three options, and inference cost differences remain large enough to decide whether a deployment ships at all.

The uncomfortable corollary for model developers is that this layer treats their products as interchangeable and is commercially motivated to keep them that way. A serving platform's pitch is that you can swap providers without rewriting anything.

It also sits oddly beside chipmakers taking equity in specific labs. One set of investors is betting on model differentiation, another on its absence, and in several cases they are the same institutions.
