Jeff Dean leaves Google after 27 years — and with him, the last of the Transformer authors are gone
Google's chief scientist departs with senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, Google Brain founding member Quoc Le, and DeepMind's Oriol Vinyals to start Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation aimed at AI for science and engineering. Google is investing in it. Demis Hassabis becomes chairman of DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. Alphabet fell about 4 percent.
Dean is not a researcher among many. He built the infrastructure the modern field runs on — MapReduce, Bigtable, TensorFlow, Google Brain — and 27 years is most of Google's existence. Losing him with Ghemawat, his long-time collaborator, is a different order of event from an executive transition.
The detail that reframes it: with Noam Shazeer's move to OpenAI in June, all eight authors of the 2017 paper that introduced the Transformer have now left Google. The company that published the architecture underneath every frontier model no longer employs anyone who wrote it down.
That Google is investing in Discovery Loop is the pragmatic move — better a stake in the venture than a competitor funded by someone else — and it is also an admission that keeping them was not on the table. A public benefit corporation aimed at science and engineering is a deliberate signal about what the founders think the frontier labs stopped doing.
Hassabis taking both the DeepMind chairmanship and Alphabet's chief scientist role consolidates research leadership into one person at a moment when the bench beneath it just thinned. The 4 percent move suggests the market read it as concentration rather than reinforcement, and the acquisition traffic in the other direction supports that reading.
