Eleven months, 30,000 vehicles, 90,000 sheet metal components
Two humanoids at BMW's Spartanburg plant produced the first deployment numbers long enough to mean something. Two robots. That is the figure to hold onto.
After an eleven-month deployment of two Figure 02 humanoids at BMW's Spartanburg plant, the robots contributed to producing over 30,000 X3 vehicles and loaded more than 90,000 sheet metal components. Separately, Japan Airlines deployed humanoid robots at Tokyo's Haneda Airport in May 2026 under a three-year operational commitment.
These are the first humanoid deployment figures with enough duration behind them to be worth reading. Eleven months covers maintenance, shift patterns, model changeovers and the ordinary degradation that a two-week demonstration hides.
But hold onto the unit count: two robots. Ninety thousand components over eleven months is roughly 270 a day between them — real work, competently done, and a rounding error against the plant's output. The correct reading is that the technology functions in production, not that it is displacing a line.
The Japan Airlines commitment is the more interesting signal for a different reason. Three years is a procurement decision with a budget line and a service agreement, in a public-facing environment with different safety expectations than a factory floor. Airports are also unstructured in ways an assembly cell is not.
These are vendor-reported production figures, which is worth stating plainly — there is no independent audit of what the robots contributed versus what happened around them. Still, dated numbers from a named plant over eleven months are a considerable improvement on the demonstration videos this field ran on for three years. Against 542,000 conventional installations a year, the humanoid share remains a rounding error with a good story.
