Industrial robot installations hit 542,000 units and a record $16.7bn
The IFR's trend report puts humanoid and AI-enabled robots as moving beyond prototypes into deployment. The conventional robot numbers underneath that headline are the ones that matter.
The International Federation of Robotics reports global installations of industrial robots reached 542,000 units in 2024, with market value at a record $16.7bn, and lists humanoid and AI-enabled robots among its top trends for 2026 as they move beyond prototypes into real deployment.
The humanoid line gets the coverage; the 542,000 figure is the more useful number. That is the installed base of conventional industrial automation — arms, gantries, cells — into which every humanoid must integrate. The robots arriving now are joining an ecosystem, not creating one.
That matters for how quickly they scale. A humanoid entering an automotive plant does not need to invent safety standards, maintenance practices, or integration tooling; those exist because half a million machines a year already require them. It is the single biggest reason automotive is the beachhead and warehousing is second.
The labour-shortage framing in the report deserves more scepticism than it usually gets. Installation growth tracks capital cycles and interest rates at least as closely as it tracks labour availability, and "shortage" is the explanation the industry prefers because it makes automation sound inevitable rather than discretionary.
Read alongside the first multi-quarter production figures from a humanoid deployment, the picture is a category graduating from pilot to line item — slowly, and inside the structures conventional robotics built.
